The main aims of the institute are to carry out scientific studies in inland and marine environments and collect data all around the country waters and evaluate.

From the beginning, the institute determine potential of aquatic resources, size of fish stocks and fishing power in the Black Sea and some part of Marmara Region.

Besides marine studies, research activities are continued in inland water and Eastern Black Sea rivers. Also, by the purpose of improvement of fisheries rearing and increase the water resources' effectiveness, there are some studies are progressing. Because of short distance, related studies also done in East Anatolia Region.

By the way of activities, the institute not only carry out scientific research, but also give practical, applicable and economically suitable information to fisherman and fish farmers. As a result, the institute try to help to improvement of the region and the country. In addition, use the obtained data help to fisheries related units to supply catching and rearing encouragement and their decisions on fishing bans.
